The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) joined the Provincial Local Government Unit of Quirino in its Women’s Month celebration with this year’s theme “Juana, Desisyon mo ay Mahalaga sa Kinabukasan ng Bawat Isa, Ikaw Na!”, held last March 17, 2015.

DTI Quirino provincial caretaker Preciosa A. Maglaya was tapped as the guest speaker of the event. In her message, she challenged the women sector in Quirino to find ways to contribute in the empowerment of women and to act now for their welfare. She said that, there is a need to capacitate women on entrepreneurship to alleviate poverty and to augment family income.

DTI’s strides in empowering women in the community were also presented which include the implementation of various programs and projects on MSME Promotion and Development, Consumer Welfare and Protection and on Gender and Development.

PC Maglaya said that in support to this advocacy, DTI is continuously strengthening    consumer laws and basic consumer rights. Business Name Registration and Accreditation of Repair Shops will also be intensified. Consumer Education through seminars and radio guesting will be conducted and consumer-related news articles will be regularly disseminated to all local radio stations and publication and mediation  of consumer complaints shall be also efficiently administered.

PC Maglaya also shared her personal experiences as a “woman-preneur” to inspire the women of Quirino.  She said that, it takes passion, integrity, hard work and honesty to prosper in one’s chosen business enterprise.

Meanwhile, a seminar on 5S Practice of Good Housekeeping was conducted for the Del Pilar Women’s Club held last March 5, 2015 at Barangay Del Pilar, Cabarroguis, Quirino attended by Fifteen (15) members.

A brief discussion on Food Safety Act was also conducted which covered the following topics: the do’s and dont’s in engaging into food processing business, the concern agency in establishing their business, securing or getting permits, among others.

Alongside with the celebration, a Consumer Education and Information (CEI) session was conducted last March 13, 2015 at the Market Master’s Office of LGU Cabarroguis, attended by 52 market stall occupants. 

The CEI focused on the importance of forming a brigade or consumer advocate group or a “FILCOP” – Filipino Consumer on Patrol, to safeguard the interest of both the consumers and businesses as well.  

The event is annually celebrated to increase public awareness and pay tribute to all women leaders in the community for their painstaking effort in further empowering women’s advocacies.
